Baseball didn’t start out as the sport we know and love today; in the 1800s, amateurs started playing a game akin to this sport with lax rules and equipment they made at home. Baseball quickly became popular, and semi pro national clubs started popping up in 1860s. Although baseball was only played in the northeastern part of the country until the 1950s, it started spreading west shortly after that, leading it to become one of America’s most beloved sports.
Indoor softball was invented in 1887 in Chicago, Illinois, and quickly became popular with women. It used to be played with a larger ball and a soft ball, hence the name changing to softball. Today, there are two types of softball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch. When playing fast-pitch, the ball is thrown quickly, and players are allowed to bunt and steal; slow-pitch softball doesn’t allow stealing or bunting, and the ball must make an arch in the air when thrown.
